How to: Install Delicious Extension for Google Chrome

If so far you’ve been using Firefox along with the official Delicious plugin – then switch to Google Chrome – the thing you’ll miss most is an integrated button to quickly bookmark sites as well as the Delicious sidebar which allowed for quick access of your bookmarks sorted by tags.

Unfortunately despite many advantages Google Chrome still has one big flaw: Extensions/Plugins aren’t supported by the current official release (v3.0) yet which makes customization almost impossible.

The dev-release (v4.0) on the other hand does already support development and installation of 3rd party extensions, in order to test the stability of the feature and eliminate bugs before extension-support officially goes live. Currently there are already some extensions in early dev-stages which integrate the most wanted Delicious features. So here is how to update your current Chrome installation to v.4.0  and install an unofficial Delicious extension that offers features closest to what’s possible with Firefox:

  1. Navigate to http://www.google.com/chrome/eula.html?extra=betachannel, accept and install v.4.0 of Chrome.
  2. Right click the Chrome icon on your desktop, then click properties.
  3. Click on the shortcut tab.
  4. Add the --enable-extensions parameter in the Target field AFTER ...\chrome.exe
    (with a space in between)

  5. Save and restart Chrome.
  6. Visit https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/animchmhhndbcfahoigdpelodbhnhepg and click on “install”. You will be asked to authorize the installation, click OK. After the installation is done, you’ll notice a new Delicious button on the upper right corner of your browser next to the tools icon etc.
  7. You’ll be asked to enter your Delicious login details. After doing so you’ll be able to fully use the new Delicious button which allows you to save bookmarks directly, search your bookmarks in a popup window and access them directly on the usual Delicious site in a new tab.

What’s still missing is an extension to implement a Delicious sidebar (which I actually liked most about the FF Plugin). Hopefully the official Delicious extension for Chrome will offer that feature soon. For now this will do perfectly fine!
