10 (really!) useful iPhone apps for women

Actually I planned on writing about an altogether different topic today. Then, out of curiosity, I googled “iPhone apps for women” and the results had me shacking my head for 5 minutes, seeing the same kind of nonsense (apps men probably think a woman would like…) over and over on almost every site. Seriously, if the iPhone would have been available in the 1950s the suggestions might have looked exactly the same. So here are my top 10 iPhone apps, which could be useful for any woman and certainly do NOT include password protected period calculators and diaper trackers:

  1. Tweetie 2 ($ 2.99)- Simply the best Twitter app out there at the moment. Easy to use, intuitive, still full of useful features that allow seamless management of multiple Twitter accounts, use of an offline mode and most importantly – creation, management and use of lists. After all, lists allow you to group people you follow under certain topics like e.g. “lifestyle” or “applenews” and then just click on the list to more selectively access tweets and follow them based on interests.
  2. Stanza (free) – An app that allows you to easily browse, download and read e-books on your iPhone. You can access open libraries with thousands of free books too. Just download as many books as you like and easily put them in your pocket so you can read them on the go, where ever you want. The iPhone screen is agreeable while reading and won’t put a strain on your eyes; you can adjust the size of the font as well if need be.
  3. Backgrounds (free) – Just like an accessory, your iPhone can be part of an overall (fashion) statement. Hence you’ll love the idea of being able to choose freely among 10,000+ free backgrounds to customize the looks of your iPhone according to your preferences, your mood or e.g. for a special occasion.
  4. iXpenseit ($ 4.99) – Easily keep track of your expenses and create reports of your expense history, showing exactly how much money you spend every day/month and what exactly causes the expenses. With this app you’ll manage your financial situation effortlessly!
  5. Jamie Oliver – 20 Minute Meals ($ 4.99) – Healthy eating is important be able to stay on top of your performance. Anyone who has a filled workday of 8+ hours knows however that it isn’t easy to cook tasty meals when you are tired and your fridge produces an echo each time you open it. Jamie Oliver offers a great app with easy instructions and an integrated shopping list function to cook quick and stunning meals and have loads of fun while doing so!
  6. Weather Pro ($3.99) – Anyone who wants to dress well and takes a look inside the closet wants to know how the weather is going to be during the day. So far I used the integrated weather app which loaded its data from Yahoo. The forecast was mostly off and there is nothing worse than dressing up too lightly and feeling cold the whole day, especially here in Germany. A friend of mine suggested this app to me as an alternative with additional information and much more reliable forecasts. I’m testing it right now, but so far it looks good!
  7. Redlaser ($ 1.99)- Use your iPhone while shopping to scan barcodes of products and easily compare prices immediately on the spot! This will be a true money saver.
  8. Chanel (free) – Watch the recent Chanel fashion show on your iPhone, browse looks and accessories and always stay informed about the latest fashion news.
  9. Doodle Jump ($ 0.99) – Most addictive game ever. Period. Will save you heroically in any boring situation ;)
  10. Awesome Note ($ 3.99) – The best thing about the iPhone is that it allows you to take notes and collect information on the go. This application offers the possibility to write down your thoughts, any impressions (like when you are traveling) or todos in short, post-it like notes and organize them in customized folders. You can password protect the information and integrate schedulers to be informed, whenever a todo becomes due for example.
