Google Buzz Beats Aperture 3 (Sorry!)

So, a colleague of mine asked me to write something about Aperture 3 today (Aperture is Apple’s photo editing and management software), which was released this morning on the Apple Store. BUT with Google taking an unexpected and aggressive plunge into the world of social media by announcing the release of Google Buzz, their very own social network, Aperture will just have to move aside (sorry!) :D

Check out this video for a short introduction:

From what I can tell, this sounds amazing. It combines key features from Twitter (status updates, followers, RTs of people your friends follow), Facebook (the friends list, sharing photos/videos and commenting on them), social bookmarking sites (like Digg) and puts all of that into one application, right into an email program we’re almost all using already. You can even add services like Twitter to have updates from there appear as buzzes. All types of media seem to be integrated beautifully. But the REALLY interesting thing in my opinion is the mobile version:

You can use the service as usual on the go, but you can also tag your location when you buzz (your posts will be geotagged automatically then)! That way you can see what people are saying nearby, interact with them and explore all buzzes that are right now happening in your city by clicking dots on a layer covering your city. Now THAT is genius and unique. It reminds me a little of how Foursquare is used. Now, imagine how popular Foursquare is becoming at the moment. Google’s scored a straight home run there. Congratulations.

I can’t wait to try it out. Right now the option doesn’t appear inside my Gmail account, probably because it’s still blocked for Europe. But a summary, first impressions and more coming as soon as possible!
